Guess The Airline - January 2012

This month, we had an advertisement from a 1971 issue of The Economist for an airline that no longer exists.

Airline advertisement titled: '[Blank]. Right to the heart of Eastern Europe', featuring an airliner landing in the Red Square in Moscow.

How to guess it?

The introductory text said that the airline no longer exists, which means that it couldn’t possibly be Aeroflot. Plus, it was a Hawker Siddeley Trident operator. I think that alone was sufficient to guess that it was this airline, which merged with another one in 1974 to become British Airways.

Statistics

In a multiple-choice poll, 51% of players got the right answer, and 49% got the wrong answer. The most popular wrong answers were Aeroflot and BOAC (16% each). The correct answer was BEA British European Airways.
