China Airlines

Airline logo

Houston and Seattle

Mid 2000s
Taiwan ROC
Frame 1 Frame 2 Frame 3

This video pleasantly mocks the stereotype of the cowboy and the Indian trying to get to Houston and Seattle, desperately asking people all over Taipei how to get there. China Airlines no longer operates passenger flights to either city but the ad is still charming. The dialog is in English but, with the help of Xue-Rong, a Mandarin-speaking new friend, and of a fellow YouTuber, the author added English subtitles at the end.

Plum Blossom

1995
Taiwan ROC
Frame 1 Frame 2 Frame 3

In 1995, China Airlines unveiled its new image and new logo, the Plum Blossom flower. It was a move that some might say was directed by a desire to get rid of a nationalistic image. In this commercial, a plum blossom flower travels through mountains, valleys, rivers, while the announcer announces, amid mystic and boastful music, that "There is a change in the air."
