published in July 2000

This is a quiz about the major air disasters of the 20th century. Please associate the accident description with the aircraft type. Good luck!

  1. At 24,000 feet, a sudden decompression causes an 18-foot portion of the fuselage to rupture on an inter-island flight. The plane lands safely. The only casualty is a flight attendant lost in sea during the decompression.

    A. Boeing 727
    B. Boeing 737
    C. Boeing 747
    D. Boeing 757

  2. On a domestic flight, after emanations of smoke in the passenger cabin, caused by a fire in the cargo compartments, the flight crew safely returned to their origin airport. Because of confusion, the plane did not turn off the runway right away, the engines were not shut down, the plane was still pressurized, and an evacuation was impossible. All occupants died before the fire crews could rescue them.

    A. Airbus A320
    B. Boeing 737
    C. McDonnell Douglas MD-11
    D. Lockheed L-1011

  3. After severe vibrations and smoke smell, the crew of this aircraft reduced throttle of the engine believed to be faulty, and shut it down. Instead, they shut down the undamaged engine. The aircraft crashed short of the runway, on a highway in Northern Europe. 47 people out of 126 on board died.

    A. Boeing 737
    B. Boeing 747
    C. Fokker 50
    D. McDonnell Douglas DC-9

  4. This cargo plane, which appeared in a very famous air disaster movie, crashed on final approach into a residential area, killing all occupants.

    A. Boeing 707
    B. Boeing 747
    C. McDonnell Douglas DC-10
    D. McDonnell Douglas MD-11

  5. Because of incorrectly programmed instruments, this plane, instead of flying into civilisation at a heading of 027, flew towards the jungle at a heading of 270 and crashed there, following fuel exhaustion. 11 passengers die and the 43 remaining were rescued after two days.

    A. Boeing 727
    B. Boeing 737
    C. McDonnell Douglas DC-8
    D. Aérospatiale Caravelle

  6. The pilot of this plane let his son fly the aircraft for a while... The auto-pilot was accidentally disengaged and the aircraft spiralled towards the ground, killing ALL 75 passengers and crew.

    A. Airbus A300
    B. Airbus A310
    C. Boeing 767
    D. Ilyushin Il-86

  7. Because of adhesive tape on the pitot tubes, either by faulty maintenance or sabotage, this aircraft's essential instruments jammed on take-off overnight, and the flight crew was unable to maintain a stable speed and altitude. While attempting an emergency landing back to the airport, the plane stalled and crashed. There are no survivors.

    A. Boeing 737
    B. Boeing 757
    C. Boeing 777
    D. McDonnell Douglas DC-10

  8. This aircraft crashed on final approach, and visibility was blamed for this accident, which occured specifically when Indonesia was suffering from extreme forest fires.

    A. Airbus A300
    B. Airbus A310
    C. Airbus A320
    D. Airbus A330

  9. This European-made type of aircraft collided with an U.S.-made plane over Eastern Europe. Both planes were lost.

    A. Aérospatiale Concorde
    B. De Havilland Comet
    C. Hawker Siddeley HS748
    D. Hawker Siddeley Trident

  10. This flight entered Soviet airspace. After a few attempts of radio contact, the plane was shot down, but the Captain successfully landed the crippled plane on a frozen lake, and nearly all passengers and crew survived.

    A. Boeing 707
    B. Boeing 747
    C. Boeing 757
    D. Boeing 767
