frequently asked questions Some are suppositions of the questions people might have... and some are actual questions asked by readers. What is the origin of the name airodyssey.net?First of all, we have not always been airodyssey.net. It used to be The Hangar, until August 1998. I wanted the name to be more inspiring and original than the previous one. I was in part inspired by "The Odyssey" of Homer (for those who don't know: the story is about Ulysses, a Greek warrior fleeing after the Trojan war, and on an exile for more than 10 years) and I am known for often using the word "odyssey" to express the notion of travel and discovery. To me, each trip on an airplane, or each trip, period, is a true odyssey. Eventually, it became AIRodyssey, with "AIR" in capitals because of an association with now defunct Aviation Internet Resources (AIR). With the new domain name inaugurated on April 12, 2001, on the 3rd anniversary, the website's name became officially airodyssey.net. Read more about it in our history section. What's the little This means that the picture is a THUMBNAIL and you can open it on a separate window by clicking on it (not on the logo). The same applies for LINKS to external sites. (The zOOm logo is copyright of airodyssey.net and has been created by Sergio Ortega - we have not "sneaked" it from another site) What about theIt's an indication that the link points to a website or to content outside of airodyssey.net. If the link is orange, it means that you are redirected to content from Amazon.com Is it true you have once been mentioned in Airliners magazine? Or was it the Toronto Star?Actually, it was both. We were mentioned in the May/June 1999 issue of Airliners. Too bad they have mentioned our former parent page, Aviation Internet Resources, giving their URL, but not ours (90% of our visitors came from AIR). Movie columnist Peter Howell also mentioned briefly airodyssey.net in his column of May 30, 2001, in page D2. Both articles can be viewed via the section called "in the media". What software do you use to make your website? For all the HTML programming, in other words the website itself, I use DomiNOTE Where is it hosted?airodyssey.net is hosted by a Canadian web hosting provider, Tera-Byte.com Can I submit any material to airodyssey.net (article, movie review, quiz, etc.)?You are invited to consult the submitting material section for important information and guidelines on submitting material to airodyssey.net. Please be advised no financial compensation for your work can be offered and and furthermore, any submissions are subject to approval by the webmaster. I noticed (...movie title...) is missing from your list? How come?If a movie is not displayed in the air disaster movie reviews section, it's most likely because either (1) I have never seen that movie (2) I have seen it only once and therefore I am unable to do a quality review as I usually do (3) I am still working on the text for that review (4) It's not a civilian air disaster movie What does the title of your flight story series "Flughafen" mean?It simply means "airport" in German. A simple name in the same way as the Airport movies. Being an aviation fan, it is one of the first German words I learned. When it was released in September 2000, the flight story's full title was: "Flughafen: Flight to Düsseldorf". When you have the wrong answer in a quiz, why aren't you told the right answer? We are human! The game would be too easy if the right answers were revealed right away. The reason why the correct answer is not revealed if you make a wrong choice, is simply because you always have a chance to re-do the quiz one more time, this time trying to choose a correct answer. When you say "United States national" or "Unitedstatesian", you mean "American", don't you?In French and in Spanish, there is an adjective that specifically and without any possible confusion, means "of, or relating to the United States of America". Its rough but not commonly accepted equivalent in English would be "Unitedstatesian". After all, America (or the Americas) is an entire continent, from as far North as Canada to as far South as Tierra del Fuego (Argentina and Chile). And according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary To avoid any possible confusion among international visitors, in respect for those (including this author) who believe that America is not a country but a continent, and in tolerance for those who wish to call themselves "Americans", airodyssey.net prefers the expression "United States national" and uses the word "American" only when referring to a company using that specific word in its name (e.g. American Airlines) or in quotation. Why are there ads on airodyssey.net? This used to be an ad-free website.airodyssey.net never was an ad-free website. Throughout our history, there has always been some form of advertisement on the website: banners promoting other partner websites or articles from airodyssey.net itself, or pop-up banners from the web hosting provider. They have always been necessary to either promote the website through link exchanging or to generate enough revenue to cover the increasing costs of maintaining this website. Since the creation of the airodyssey.net domain name in 2001, a compromise was reached and the visitors' voice was heard: NO MORE ANNOYING POP-UP BANNERS! Are you going to run out of commercials for "Guess The Airline"?"Guess The Airline" will continue until December 2009. I've seen this neat airline commercial on TV some time ago. Can I get a copy? Can you put it on your website? What airline was it?You can try contacting me if by any chance I have seen it before, but there is no guarantee I can publish it on airodyssey.net. If I see that a significant number of people are asking about the same commercial, such as the United Airlines "CEO" commercial, which was found, a message will be posted on the Help Wanted section. As for obtaining a copy on VHS or DVD of any commercial, I'm afraid I don't have the time nor the budget for that. You can try contacting the airline directly or the advertising agency that produced the commercial, if you are ready to fork out money for it! I have a hard time finding a movie called (...title...) but I noticed you reviewed it. Can you please sell me a copy? The only movies I sell are via Amazon.com, through our shop, and on specially marked movie reviews. Most made-for-TV air disaster movies are indeed hard to find. The only thing I can suggest is to look for your movie on online auctions, and to check TV schedules regularly. You may also verify if your movie is available for sale online from another country... if you are willing to convert it to your TV system (NTSC, PAL, SECAM) once you receive it. I am looking for a job in the field of aviation. Can you help me?Sorry, no. This is not part of our services. There are several websites out there. Try visiting a website such as AviationInterviews.com Do you have the telephone number, fax number, telex, e-mail address of (...airline name...)?Again, this is not part of our services. Try a search on Google for the airline of your choice, or contact your international operator for directory assistance. You may also try searching for International white pages I am flying to (...destination...) on (...date...). How can I obtain the cheapest rate?Travel counseling is not part of our services. See your travel agent or call the airline of your choice directly. You may also try an online travel agent such as Travelocity Can you send me updates by mail regarding aviation? We don't do that, particularly on a tight budget like ours. (airodyssey.net is a not-for-profit organization). Try subscribing to an aviation magazine, such as Airways Magazine Please help me get in touch with (...name...), who works for an aviation company.Another thing we don't do. Besides, we have a very strict privacy policy and share no information whatsoever regarding our visitors. There are specialized services out there, such as CrewConnected.com Please note that the links to external websites above are displayed as a courtesy, and do not represent an endorsement from us.
