Frequently asked questions

Why is the website called airodyssey.net?

Because each little airplane ride can be a little air odyssey! The website was first known as The Hangar in 1998. The name was then changed to airOdyssey a few months later, which was then styled as AIRodyssey following an association with now defunct Aviation Internet Resources (AIR). With the new domain name inaugurated on April 12, 2001, on the website's third anniversary, the name became officially airodyssey.net. Read more about it in the history section.

Why are there ads on airodyssey.net? This used to be an ad-free website.

airodyssey.net never was an ad-free website. Throughout our history, there has always been some form of advertisement on the website: banners promoting other partner websites or articles from airodyssey.net itself, or pop-up banners from the web hosting provider. They have always been necessary to either promote the website through link exchanging or to generate enough revenue to cover the increasing costs of maintaining this website.

Since the creation of the airodyssey.net domain name in 2001, a compromise was reached and the visitors' voice was heard: NO MORE ANNOYING POP-UP BANNERS!

Have you ever been mentioned in the media?

airodyssey.net was mentioned in a major aviation magazine from the United States in 1999 (article about aviation websites) and 2006 (in response to a reader's question about radio callsigns). Movie columnist Peter Howell also mentioned briefly airodyssey.net on his column of the Toronto Star of May 30, 2001, page D2.

But the mention I'm the most proud of is when John Merry e-mailed me in August 2001 to advise that he included what was then known as AIRodyssey into his Aviation Internet Directory: A Guide to the 500 Best Web SitesAmazon.com link. Because of the way the sites are categorized and thanks to the alphabetical order, AIRodyssey is the very first website listed on the book! See for yourself on Amazon.com, following the link provided here.

When you have the wrong answer in a quiz, why aren't you told the right answer?

The game would be too easy if the right answers were revealed right away. The reason why the correct answer is not revealed if you make a wrong choice, is simply because you always have a chance to re-do the quiz, this time trying to choose a correct answer.

Are you going to run out of commercials for Guess The Airline?

Guess The Airline will continue until December 2010.

I have seen this really nice airline commercial on TV many years ago. Can you tell me which airline it was, how I can get it, etc.?

Check if the ad is already displayed on the television commercials. If it's not there, you can try contacting me if by any chance I have seen it before and I'll see if I can help. You can also try a video library such as YouTubeExternal link.

I see you reviewed this air disaster movie that I've been searching for so long. Can you please send me a copy?

The only movies I sell are via Amazon.com, through the shop, and on specially marked movie reviews. Most made-for-TV air disaster movies are indeed hard to find. The only thing I can suggest is to look for your movie on online auctions, and to check TV schedules regularly. You may also verify if your movie is available for sale online from another country... if you are willing to convert it to your TV system or region once you receive it.

I noticed there is a movie missing from your air disaster movie list. How come?

If a movie is not displayed in the air disaster movie reviews section, it could be for one of the following reasons.
  • I have never seen that movie
  • I have seen it only once and therefore I am unable to do a quality review as I usually do
  • I am still working on the text for that review
  • It's not a civilian air disaster movie

If you'd like to rectify the situation, see the next question! (And thank you in advance!)

Can I submit material to airodyssey.net (article, quiz, etc.)?

To submit a quiz, you are invited to go to the "send your quiz" page. For any other types of material you are interested in submitting, please inquire through the contact form first. Please be advised no financial compensation for your work can be offered and furthermore, any submissions are subject to approval by the webmaster.

Can I use your material on my website, newsletter, etc.?

Please refer to the "reproduction" section of the terms of service for details. If you're not sure if it's okay for you to borrow from my website or if you have any questions, please send an e-mail.

How do I link to your website?

You can use the banners along with their respective HTML codes. However, a simple text link would be sufficient. Please send an e-mail and I could link back to you, perhaps?

What software do you use to make your website?

For all the HTML programming, in other words the website itself, I use DomiNOTEExternal link, through raw HTML. That's how I've always done it; I don't like WYSIWYG ("What you see is what you get") editors. For the pictures, I use Paint Shop ProExternal link, which I find easier to manage than PhotoShop. As for the file transfer, I use CuteFTPExternal link.

Can you help me find an aviation job, contact information for an airline, an air fare, etc.

As much as I'd like to assist in this type of request, I'm afraid it's outside of my field of competence. There are many specialized websites out there for aviation jobs, airline directories, tickets, etc.

When you say "United States national" or "Unitedstatesian", you mean "American", don't you?

In French and in Spanish, there is an adjective that specifically and without any possible confusion, means "of, or relating to the United States of America". Its rough but not commonly accepted equivalent in English would be "Unitedstatesian". After all, America (or the Americas) is an entire continent, from as far North as Canada to as far South as Tierra del Fuego (Argentina and Chile). And according to the Merriam-Webster dictionaryExternal link, an "American" is first and foremost "a native or inhabitant of North or South America".

To avoid any possible confusion among international visitors, in respect for those (including this author) who believe that America is not a country but a continent, and in tolerance for those who wish to call themselves "Americans", airodyssey.net prefers the expression "United States national" and uses the word "American" only when referring to a company using that specific word in its name (e.g. American Airlines) or in quotation.
