Salzburg

"A man of ordinary talent will always be ordinary whether he travels or not; but a man of superior talent (...) will go to pieces if he remains forever in the same place." - Mozart
Salzburg is really a city that transpires this small-town feeling I had before... and which, in the minds of many people, brings memories of the movie "The Sound of Music." Be shocked if you want to, but I forgot to rent the movie before leaving. And the weather was inclement. It didn't prevent me from loving Salzburg! The streets are beautiful once I step out of the area where my hotel was, and so are the gardens near Schloß Mirabell, the Festung from down below, and the herds of tourists coming from all over too. I'm definitely coming back to this romantic city... hopefully with someone to be romantic with!

Salzburg - Mirabell Garten
Mirabell Garten - The access point to the Alte Stadt (Old City) from my hotel: this beautiful garden lined with flowers and fountains.

Salzburg - Mirabellplatz
Solo at Mirabellplatz - Solo is eyeing the Schloß Mirabell. Or is it the Schloß that is eyeing Solo?

Salzburg - Mozartplatz
Mozartplatz - Yes, another Mozart statue, but this time, it's in his hometown.

Salzburg - Residenzplatz
Residenzplatz - Yes, that is an Upside Down Helicopter In A Public Place. And I do believe that is exactly the title of that "work of art" by Paola Pivi. On the right you have a fountain and the Residenz (Residence) of the Salzburg elite for over 700 years.

Salzburg - Chess
Chess time - This giant chess game was taking place just a few footsteps from Residenzplatz. A teenager (pictured) playing against an old man. The latter won, in the middle of the pounding rain. I had never watched a public chess game before and I found it very interesting.

Salzburg - Skyline
Skyline - It's an ancient city, but I think the word "skyline" could nevertheless apply. The Hohensalzburg Festung (Salzburg Fortress) can be seen on the top right.

Salzburg - Festung
Festung - Solo is contemplating the scenery. I was very fearful of him freefalling into oblivion, so he was sort of "riding" the cliff.

Salzburg - Festung
Festung - And I am contemplating the camera... or the viewer. You decide.

Salzburg - Festung
Festung - A close-up view of the Fortress, from down below.

Salzburg - Hellbrunn
Schloß Hellbrunn - This beautiful castle is located in the southeast of the Alte Stadt. Following the end of the big rain shower, the park was unbelievably empty. So, I had to wait 30 minutes for the guided tour and visited the castle inside.

Salzburg - Hellbrunn
Impolite statue? - Look closely. This statue is not giving you the finger. And you thought I'd put something this impolite on my website? Naah.

Salzburg - Wasserspiele
Wasserspiele (Water Games) - During the tour, the employee turned on several booby traps which would obviously make everyone wet. Funny enough, people pay to do a guided tour... but are afraid of getting wet! I wanted to get wet but the booby traps were desensitized to me or something!

Salzburg - Gazebo
"The Sound of Music" Gazebo - This is from a scene of that famous Julie Andrews movie which, at the time of writing these lines, I haven't seen yet. But, I could nevertheless immortalize that moment. I took the picture discretely as to not disturb one of the many "Sound of Music" tours just steps apart.

Salzburg - Mozarts Geburtshaus
Mozarts Geburtshaus - I avoided the line-ups by showing up really early... but there were nevertheless loads of Asian tourists as part of a tour. Loads of little pieces of Mozart's childhood, but a little bit pricey, I must admit.

Salzburg - Mönchsberg
Mönchsberg - Behind Kapitelplatz, there are steps in which, after a long 20-minute uphill walk, you get this splendid view towards Southern Salzburg in which I really though to myself "What a wonderful world." Yes, very kitschy I know.

Salzburg - Mönchsberg
Mönchsberg - Doesn't this look like a Ricola commercial?

Salzburg - Hotel Room
Pension AdlerhofLink - This is the cheapest I could find in a touristy place like Salzburg, yet still have a comfortable bed and my own bathroom at a good location: 58.00 EUR per night, breakfast included. Less than 5 minutes from the train station, and less than 10 minutes from the Mirabellplatz. Areas near train stations are usually seedy, but this one was the exception. This is a good family-run hotel that I recommend.
